Keeping current with cutting-edge advancements in vision care, Dr. Thompson and our team are extremely knowledgeable regarding ocular diseases.
Our patients living with diabetes, know that their body doesn’t utilize sugar properly and when their sugar levels rise there may be damage to the retinal blood vessels. This damage is one of the leading causes of blindness in adults, and is known as diabetic retinopathy. The necessary comprehensive eye exam done by our Vegas Cigna eye doctor is the only reliable way to diagnose diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Thompson will dilate your pupil and use a device known as an ophthalmoscope in order to see your retina more clearly and how far the retinopathy has developed. It’s especially important to have this diabetic exam because diabetes also increases your risk for cataracts and glaucoma. After cataracts, glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. Dr. Thompson performs various tests to detect glaucoma that are thorough and dependable. When comprehensive testing is done, not only can glaucoma be caught early on, but other ocular diseases as well, including macular degeneration.
Many ocular diseases affect central vision but age-related macular degeneration is the most common of these disorders. Mostly affecting people over 60, macular degeneration occurs in two forms, wet and dry. “Wet” macular degeneration is not as common but more aggressive in its development, prompting loss of central vision. “Dry” macular degeneration is more common and progresses much slower before causing vision loss. Our Vegas Cigna eye doctor will give you an all-inclusive exam to not only detect the disease but determine if you are at risk of developing it. Dr. Thompson tests the sharpness of your vision and will use an “Amsler grid” to determine if your vision has already been affected. Other parts of the exam will include pupil dilation and use of a slit lamp. Dr. Thompson, and our dedicated staff, are experts in diagnosing ocular diseases and keep you well informed throughout all procedures.
